Au départ son activité est dans l'enregistrement d'amateur et particuliers (pour immortalisé sur disque des évènements comme les mariages et cérémonies diverses..) 
du Vrais rock n'roll et du rhythm and blues durant les années 1950. Freed est né le 15 Décembre 1922 à Johnstown en Pennsylvanie. Aprés la seconde guerre mondiale (dont il est vétéran) il commence sa carrière comme commentateur sportif sur WKST (New Castle - Pennsylvanie). Il devient ensuite directeur des programme de WKBN (radio de Youngston - Ohio) et de WIBE(radio de Philadelphie). Après avoir travaillé sur les ondes de WAKR (Akron -Ohio) et de WKEL (Cleveland) il rejoint WJW en 1951.
